Westtown antique needlework globe

A scarce antique needlework terrestrial globe worked by a student at the Westtown Boarding School, circa 1810-30. This object is in near perfect condition with no needlework loss and would be a prize in any collection.

A great child size Delaware Valley antique windsor chair with perfect form and proportions. Probably Philadelphia, circa 1770-80. The eighteenth century American antique embroidered bible sitting on the seat is now part of the Graham, Hoskins, Warder needlework collection at Winterthur.

                                 

                                    

                                 

                                 

Delaplain antique needlework sampler

A truly outstanding and ambitious Chester County antique sampler worked by Jane Delaplain in 1811. This is one of the largest and best examples of this group, the sampler-maker having far exceeded the quality and quantity of embroidery normally found. Jane's house still stands in Centerville, Delaware and she was married at the church just across from the entrance to Winterthur Museum.

The first of two nearly identical and apparently unique late eighteenth century spice boxes, Chester County, Pennsylvania or possibly Virginia. Worked in cherry-wood with carved, inlaid and even paint decorated elements it's quite an example of rural antique American furniture.

                                        

                                          

                                        

                                       

                                  

Mary Blakiston, antique needlework sampler

Signed Mary Blakiston, 1792, this silk picture from Philadelphia was purchased directly from a descendant and sold at one of our past "Collectors Sale" Events. It retains its early frame with traces of Philadelphia newsprint on the rear. American antique Delaware Valley chest

A fine early American antique walnut Chippendale chest with lowboy style top, case width only 33", original ogee bracket feet. Chests with lowboy tops are sought after by collectors and this is a particularly good example.

Rarest of the rare, this sophisticated silk embroidery attributed to the school of Elizabeth Marsh is one of Philadelphia's earliest antique needleworks, circa 1730-40. More information about these extraordinary pictures can be found in Betty Ring's book Girlhood Embroidery on pages 354-360. Boston side chair

A great pair of William & Mary period American antique side chairs with perfect form and proportions, upholstered in aged leather. These chairs, made in the Boston area, were very popular in the colonies and were sold up and down the coast from 1710 to 1750.

An early and important Boston band sampler worked by Hannah Mountfort, dated 1735. This rare example is listed on page 65 of the landmark publication American Samplers by Bolton & Coe published in 1921, (the first significant book about early American antique  needlework which created great interest in the subject).

                               

                                     

                                  

                                        

                                          

Early Portrait Bust

A very early antique portrait bust of a young woman. The hair styling is elaborate, in the Flemish style and the piece can be dated as early as 1400. Brendlinger antique needlework sampler

A wonderful and very colorful Pennsylvania folk art sampler worked by Sophia Brendlinger in 1841. Sophia lists the names of her parents, America, her station, and Douglish (Douglasville) her dwelling place. Geneaogical records lists New Hanover as her birth place in 1819. This village is only a few miles from Douglasville. Worked in wool on linen, conservation mounted in the original frame and in excellent condition. A nearly identical sampler is pictured in Kruger, A Gallery of American Samplers, The Theodore Kapnek Collection, p.84, fig.120.
                       
                                    
                                       
                                   

Thomas Dring, West Chester

An extremely rare and important Chester County, Pennsylvania American antique stick barometer signed Thomas Dring, West Chester. Eighteenth century American barometers are very rare and this example is one of three known by this maker. One is in the Chester County Historical Society collection and is illustration #36 in the book by Margaret Berwind Schiffer, Furniture and Its Makers of Chester County, Pennsylvania. Sarah Benjamin antique needlework sampler

An interesting Baltimore, Maryland house sampler worked by Sarah Benjamin,the daughter of a Jewish merchant. Sarah stitched this beautiful embroidery in 1828 when she was 11 years old.
We were happy to provide an image of this important needlework to author Gloria Seaman Allen and to see it published in her excellent book, A Maryland Sampling. The sampler and a discussion of Sarah and her family can be seen on page 263-264.
                                     
                                    

Jane Wilson antique needlework sampler

A rare and important eighteenth century Delaware sampler worked by Jane Wilson in 1791, the fourteenth year of her age. Delaware samplers are scarce in the market place and this spectacular example stands among the best of  the group. An almost identical sampler in the Winterthur collection worked by Hannah McIntire can be seen in Winterthur publication, Eye For Excellence, p.93.
Jane Wilson lived in Mill Creek Hundred north west of Wilmington.
Originally sold by us in 2000 this fine needlework has subsequently been acquired by the Metropolitan Museum.
                                  
                                  

Godshalk tall clock

An outstanding figured walnut, early Chippendale, American antique grandfather clock with brass dial works by Jacob Godshalk, then of  the North Ward in Philadelphia. Nisley antique needlework sampler

An outstanding American antique sampler worked by Francis Nisley of Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania probably around 1830. The unique design, bright colors and the girl at the doorway of the shuttered house minding her dog and cats on the lawn, make this a truly special needlework.
Perfect condition and retains its original green silk ribbon border.

Alice Cheney antique sampler

Alice B. Cheyney's outstanding Chester County, Pennsylvania sampler worked in 1817 at age 14. This needlework is one of a group considered to be the best of  that county. Alice names Mary H. Walker as her teacher. Mary is well known for her wonderful map sampler in the collection of The Chester County Historical Society. A complete discussion of these samplers can be found in Betty Ring's well known book Girlhood Embroidery, pages 396-399.
